Child’s Pose is one of my favorite yoga poses. It is very calming and helps to center children when they are having a bad day. Best of all it can be done anywhere.
Why Child’s Pose is Good for You
Calms the nervous system
Relieves stress
Eases back strain
Centers and grounds you
Reduces excess energy
Helps stretch your back, hip flexors, and obliques
How To Do Child’s Pose
Sit on your feet. Your knees can be together or open wide. Rest your forehead on the ground. Your arms can rest beside you with palms facing up or you can reach toward the top of the mat with palms facing down.
Add Pressure for More Relaxation
At the base of the spine just above the sacrum, there is an area where several nerve endings come together. When you apply gentle pressure to this area it has a calming affect on the nervous system.
Go into child’s pose. Have someone sit behind you and firmly run their hands up and down your back from top to bottom. This will stretch and open up the vertebrae in the spine. Have them rest their hands one on top of the other at the base of his back. Breathe in together and as you exhale have them press into this area with their hands.
If you are not trained in yoga it is best to seek a yoga professional and receive hands-on training before attempting this at home.
